Spinal Cord Injury Link Workers Conference Hailed a Huge Success

26/9/2008

The Spinal Cord Injury Link Worker Network supports health care professionals who have a dedicated interest in caring for people with spinal cord injuries whilst they are awaiting admission to specialist Spinal Cord Injury Centres.  The Link Workers Scheme was developed in 1998 to provide interested and motivated staff members with an opportunity to develop an appropriate appreciation of the needs of spinal cord injured patients in the hope of influencing the quality of their pre-transfer care to reduce the incidence of any pre-transfer complications.

PotterRees ran and sponsored the first North West conference for Spinal Cord Injury Link Workers in September 2006 and have continued to do so annually in September each year by identifying appropriate areas of interest.  This year's SCI Link Workers Conference was held on Friday 19th September at The Neuro Support Centre, Norton Street, Liverpool, an excellent venue close to all ameneties and transport routes. Topics included, 'Pain Issues following a Spinal Cord Injury'; 'ITU Care Pathways'; 'Discharge Planning for those with SCI';  'Sex and Sexuality after a Spinal Cord Injury'; ' Spinal Cord Injury Physiotherapy and How to Avoid Complications' and 'Legal Issues'.

The feedback from this year's event has been fantastic, all the speakers contributed a great deal to the day with particular praise for Alison Lamb, Nurse Consultant at Midlands SCI Centre, Oswestry,  who highlighted some of the practical issues of managing spinal cord injured patients, with one delegate saying;

 "Alison Lamb provided an inspirational talk, it motivated me to try to make changes and implement a pathway......"

PotterRees are proud to sponsor this event and are already in talks to begin on next year's conference, which promises to deliver more inspirational, practical and relevant advice and we are actively considering the helpful suggestions made by those who attended this year's Link Workers Conference to hopefully address the various areas identified.
