Rhyl Woman Received Compensation following Husband's Routine Op Death

1/10/2008

Yvonne Clarke's husband Melvyn died in November 2005 almost two weeks after a  routine hernia operation.   Mrs Clarke has been awarded thousands of pounds in compensation but has said that 'no amount of money could make up for losing my best friend'.

Mr Clarke was admitted to hospital in Rhyl on 27th October 2005 for a routine operation to remove a double hernia in his groin and was discharged the next day.  However, he soon began to feel unwell and went back to his GP complaining of severe vomiting and stomach pains.

His GP failed to refer him back to a specialist and he was not re-admitted to hospital until  November 2nd where he underwent further surgery.  It was found he had a severe blockage in his bowel that was causing his symptoms, this blockage then affected the ability of the blood to clot which in turn caused a bleed.  He suffered multiple organ failure whilst in intesive care and died on 7th November 2005.

Solicitors for the Claimant said if the GP had referred Mr Clarke back to a specialist sooner, he could have been saved.  This week compensation was paid to Mrs Clarke as an out of court settlement, without admission of fault.
