Failure to treat Baby Boy for Head Injury
24/10/2008
Jonathan and Rebecca Stanton, of Ashton-Under-Lyne, took their eight month old baby son James to Tameside General Hospital after he fell from a table and hit his head. They allege that none of the medical staff in the A&E Department looked at James, even when they asked a Doctor for help.
After 90 minutes of waiting in the A&E Department, James was crying and becoming more and more distressed so Mr and Mrs Stanton left the hospital to feed him but became increasingly worried when James did not improve. They phoned NHS Direct, who told them to take their son straight back to A&E.
They decided to try the larger unit at Royal Oldham Hospital, where he was checked and was found to have a fractured skull and a brain haemorrhage. By this time, James was vomitting and passing out. He was admitted to a ward straight away and taken for emergency surgery for the blood clot on his brain.
Tameside General Hospital have said they would like to apologise to James and his family and have assured them the matter will be urgently investigated.
