£8 million for injured boy

15/4/2009

Nine year old Callum Cross suffered catastrophic spinal and brain injuries in March 2002 whilst on a family day out at Mead Open Farm in Bedfordshire.  The accident happened as his father, Patrick Cross, failed to see Callum as he reversed in the car park.

Mrs Justice Swift at the High Court in London heard that Mr Cross' insurers, who admitted liability early on, had made an interim payment of £1.7 million to enable the family to buy a suitable home.  Callum's needs were evident and  a settlement was reached of a £2.5 million lump sum plus yearly payments of £220,000.

Mrs Justice Swift stated, "It is quite clear that, although he is in many ways a delightful boy, he can be difficult on occasions.  I have no doubt that considerable patience, forebearance and hard work is required to deal with that.  Whilst this order cannot possibly put him back to the circumstances in which he otherwise would have been, I hope it will play a part in enabling him to live to his full potential."
